The Ghanaian government has announced a temporary suspension of citizenship applications for members of the African diaspora. Officials state the pause is necessary to redesign the system, making it more accessible and user-friendly for descendants of those affected by the transatlantic slave trade.
Since 2016, Ghana has offered a pathway to nationality for individuals who can prove African ancestry. This initiative—rooted in the Pan-African vision of the country’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah—was further invigorated by the 2019 “Year of Return” campaign. While the program has successfully granted citizenship to over 1,000 people, including music icon Stevie Wonder, the current process has faced significant criticism.
The Hurdles: DNA Tests and Tight Deadlines
The suspension comes after numerous applicants raised concerns regarding the complexity and speed of the existing requirements. Dr. Erieka Bennet, ambassador for the Diaspora African Forum, noted that the current administrative framework creates “impossible” barriers for many.
Key challenges identified by applicants include:
- The DNA Requirement: Applicants must currently submit DNA evidence within just one week of filing. Many argue this timeframe is unrealistic, while others question the scientific reliability of such tests for heritage verification.
- Strict Documentation Windows: A universal one-week deadline for all supplementary paperwork has proven difficult for international applicants to meet.
- Complex Vetting: The process involves multiple stages of vetting and a mandatory one-day orientation before a final ceremony overseen by President John Mahama.
The Cost of Connection
Financial barriers have also been a major point of contention. The total cost of obtaining Ghanaian citizenship through this route is substantial:

This move is seen as vital for maintaining the momentum of the diaspora’s contribution to the national economy, as many seek citizenship to gain the right to vote, own property, and access public services.
Ghana is not alone in this outreach; neighboring countries like Benin and Sierra Leone also offer similar citizenship pathways based on verified ancestral ties.
