U.S. Mission in Nigeria

Diplomatic and consular activities at the major American hubs in Nigeria

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has officially confirmed a temporary suspension of all diplomatic and consular operations across the country this week. Consequently, routine services at major facilities in Abuja and Lagos are now on a short hiatus.

This operational pause will disrupt visa processing and other administrative functions for four days.

Service Suspension Details

Effective immediately, the diplomatic freeze impacts the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos. Consequently, applicants seeking visas or American Citizen Services will face a temporary blackout of availability.

The Mission advises that all non-emergency appointments are suspended during this window. Travelers and citizens requiring assistance must wait until operations normalize early next week.

Closure Timeline

According to the official directive, the closure spans the majority of the current week.

  • Start Date: Wednesday, December 23, 2025

  • End Date: Friday, December 26, 2025

  • Resumption: Monday, December 29, 2025

While the Mission did not explicitly cite the reason in their text, the timing coincides with the global Christmas holiday observances.

Official Statement

The announcement was disseminated via the Mission’s social media channels. It establishes the return to business strictly on the following Monday.

The statement reads:

“The US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Wednesday, December 23, through Friday, December 26, 2025. We will resume normal work operations on Monday, December 29, 2025.”

Applicants with urgent needs are encouraged to plan their schedules around these blocked-out dates.
