The Central African Republic will hold its biggest democratic event in years when citizens vote for president, parliament, regional and local leaders all on the same day — 28 December.
A Make-or-Break Moment
UN Special Representative Abdou Abarry told the Security Council Thursday that the polls could become a turning point for a country rebuilding after decades of conflict.
“This vote offers a real chance to cement peace and strengthen democratic institutions,” Abarry said, praising recent progress on border security with Chad and Cameroon.
Security Still Fragile
The 2012 civil war left deep scars. Even with the UN’s MINUSCA peacekeeping mission since 2014, armed groups continue attacks in several regions.
Latest figures:
- 665,000 Central Africans living as refugees abroad
- More than 440,000 internally displaced inside the country
Why These Elections Matter
The United Nations calls the December vote “essential” for reconciliation, stability and long-term recovery.
With campaigning already underway, the world is watching to see if CAR can deliver peaceful, credible elections and take another step away from its violent past.
