A special criminal court initiated proceedings on Monday against the wife and son of the removed Gabonese president, Ali Bongo.
The trial involving Sylvia Bongo Ondimba and Noureddin Bongo Valentin began with both defendants absent. Court sessions are scheduled to run for the duration of the week.
Serious Charges Leveled
The former First Lady and her son join a group of 13 people confronting grave accusations. They stand charged with misappropriating financial assets intended for the Gabonese presidency for personal enrichment.
The defendants collectively answer to a total of 12 different counts. These include misdirection of government funds, money laundering activities, acts of corruption, and the fabrication of official records.
From Custody to International Denouncement
Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo were taken into custody in August 2023. This detention followed the military intervention that deposed President Ali Bongo. That coup ultimately terminated the Bongo family’s nearly 56-year political dynasty.
The mother and son spent approximately 20 months incarcerated in Libreville. Following their release in May 2025, they departed the country. They subsequently alleged that they suffered torture during their period of confinement.
In a public declaration issued in July, they vehemently refuted all charges. They expressed their firm resolve to uncover the truth and seek judicial remedy. Their statement asserted:
“The treatment of our family has been criminal and cruel, and we will fight to the end to ensure that the truth is known and justice is done.”
Political Battle From Abroad
The former First Lady and her son are currently residing abroad, with reports placing them in London. Neither individual chose to appear for the legal proceedings.
Both continue to deny any wrongdoing regarding the accusations. They have publicly denounced the legal actions as merely a political display.
Noureddin Bongo explicitly claimed the entire process fails to satisfy the necessary criteria for a fair and impartial trial.
The son of the ousted leader recently generated substantial interest on social media. He released footage, allegedly captured with a hidden camera, to reveal his alleged poor treatment by the administration of the current President, Brice Oligui Nguema.
In response, the Gabonese presidency accused Noureddin Bongo of actively working to undermine the nation’s stability.
