The national authority overseeing food and drug safety has established a non-negotiable end date for certain alcohol products.
The regulatory agency confirmed that all alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and containers under 200 milliliters must cease production and sales by December 2025.
Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency, delivered the announcement during a Tuesday press conference in the capital city.
She clarified the rationale behind the key policy decision. It forms part of a larger strategy to curtail the rising abuse of low-cost alcohol among both young citizens and commercial drivers.
The Social Cost of Small Packaging
The Director-General outlined the severe public health and societal damage linked to the compact packaging format:
- Ease of Abuse: Adeyeye stated, “The proliferation of high-alcohol-content beverages in sachets and small containers has made such products easily accessible, affordable, and concealable.” This factor has accelerated widespread substance misuse and dependency among young people and professional drivers.
- Societal Issues: She directly connected the resultant public health crisis to “increased incidences of domestic violence, road accidents, school dropouts, and social vices across communities.”
Legislature Confirms Enforcement Deadline
This major public health announcement follows a firm directive from the nation’s Senate. The legislature mandated the regulatory body to fully implement a restriction on manufacturing and selling alcohol in small containers by December 2025. Crucially, the Senate insisted that no further postponements of this deadline would be permitted.
The resolution was adopted after a detailed floor debate. A senator initiated the discussion, expressing deep concern over the agency’s repeated deferral of the ban’s enforcement.
The senator noted the agency had previously shifted the deadline multiple times, spanning from 2023 to 2025. He argued that this inconsistent action encouraged manufacturers to intensify their lobbying efforts.
He issued a strong caution: any further delay would betray public confidence and undermine the country’s commitment to international health standards.
Compliance and Public Safety Mandate
Director-General Adeyeye explained the final directive aligns with the Senate’s goal. This goal is to address the health and social issues fueled by cheap, widely available alcohol.
She acknowledged the regulatory body previously reached an accord with industry stakeholders. This agreement was meant to phase out the products, despite earlier deadlines being pushed back. However, she stressed the legislative order is now final. She firmly warned that the regulatory agency will grant zero additional extensions.
Adeyeye strongly urged manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to ensure total compliance immediately. This must happen well in advance of the enforcement date. She framed the restriction as a safety measure, rather than a punitive one, focused strictly on protecting public health.
“This ban is not punitive; it is protective,” she asserted. “It is aimed at safeguarding the health and future of our children and youth.” She concluded that the decision rests on both scientific data and necessary public health considerations.
“We cannot continue to sacrifice the well-being of Nigerians for short-term economic gain. The health of a nation is its true wealth,” she finalized.
