The Ogun State Government has banned graduation ceremonies for kindergarten and nursery pupils. Officials stressed that such celebrations should only take place at recognised academic milestones.
Graduation Ceremonies Limited to Key Stages
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, announced the decision during a press briefing on preparations for the 2024/2025 academic session.
From now on, graduation parties will only be allowed at the following levels:
- Primary Six (Basic 6)
- Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3)
- Senior Secondary School Three (SS3)
Arigbabu explained that the policy discourages unnecessary spending and reduces social pressures linked with early graduation parties. He urged schools to keep ceremonies modest and tied to true academic progress.
Textbook Policy: Six-Year Cycle
In addition, the state introduced a strict six-year cycle for textbooks. Schools will no longer be allowed to impose frequent book changes on parents. Any school that violates this rule will face sanctions.
According to Arigbabu, quality education depends on effective teaching and proper use of resources, not on constant textbook replacement.
Supporting Affordable Education
The commissioner said the ministry will monitor compliance with the new rules. He stressed that the measures aim to reduce the financial burden on parents while ensuring learning remains impactful and affordable.
Parents, teachers, and school administrators have been urged to support the reforms. Arigbabu noted that these changes are in the best interest of learners and their families.
Similar Policies in Other States
Ogun State is not alone in this approach. Oyo, Imo, Edo, Ebonyi, and Benue States have already introduced similar restrictions. These efforts reflect a growing move to curb exploitative practices in schools and make education more affordable for parents.
