Trump Skips G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Sends Vance

TRUMP

U.S. President Donald Trump has opted out of attending the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, set for November 22–23, 2025, delegating Vice President JD Vance to represent the United States.

The decision comes amid strained relations with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the summit’s host.

Tensions Between Trump and Ramaphosa

Trump’s absence follows a contentious history with Ramaphosa, marked by a heated White House meeting earlier in 2025.

Trump repeated baseless claims of a “genocide” against white farmers in South Africa, which Ramaphosa’s government has strongly refuted, denying any racial motivation behind farm violence.

Trump has also imposed 30% tariffs on South African exports to the U.S. and suspended financial aid, citing disagreements over South Africa’s position on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In March 2025, the U.S. expelled South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool for criticizing Trump.

South Africa’s Response and Summit Outlook

South African officials have welcomed Vance’s participation, emphasizing that the summit’s success hinges on meaningful dialogue, not the presence of any single leader.

The G20, comprising 19 countries plus the European and African Unions, gathers annually to address global economic policies.

This year’s event, the first hosted on African soil, focuses on Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts

The Afrikaans trade union Solidariteit, previously criticized by Ramaphosa for a Washington visit, plans to return to the U.S. in September 2025.

The group aims to meet with the Department of State to discuss ending South Africa’s racial-redress laws, restoring diplomatic ties, and negotiating a fair trade agreement.

Looking Ahead

Trump’s absence underscores ongoing U.S.-South Africa tensions, but the summit offers a chance for global leaders to tackle pressing economic challenges.

With Vance attending, the U.S. remains engaged in the G20’s mission, while South Africa seeks to lead impactful discussions on the world stage.
