Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has raised hopes for the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a well-known Egyptian-British activist, by asking officials to review a pardon request, according to the National Council for Human Rights.

A Voice Against Oppression

Alaa Abd el-Fattah, 43, became famous during the 2011 Arab Spring protests that toppled Hosni Mubarak. He has spent much of the last 10 years in prison for speaking out against Egypt’s government.

In 2014, he was jailed for protesting without permission. In December 2021, he got a five-year sentence for sharing a social media post about a prisoner’s death.

Authorities extended his detention to January 2027, ignoring over two years he spent in pre-trial detention.

Family and Global Support

Abd el-Fattah’s mother, Laila Soueif, has fought hard for his freedom. She went on a hunger strike and asked the British government for help, as her son holds dual citizenship.

Talks between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Sisi have kept attention on his case.

Pardon Decision Pending

On September 9, 2025, Sisi ordered a review of a clemency petition for several prisoners, including Abd el-Fattah. The National Council for Human Rights says a decision is expected soon, but it depends on Sisi’s final choice.

Why It Matters

Abd el-Fattah’s case shows Egypt’s tough stance on critics since Sisi took power in 2013. While some political prisoners have been freed recently, his ongoing detention has drawn global concern, with the United Nations calling it unfair.

A pardon could hint at a change in Egypt’s approach to human rights.
