Australia’s cricket team has officially withdrawn from its scheduled Test series against South Africa, citing “unacceptable” health risks due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in the country.
The decision comes just weeks before the team was set to depart, marking a significant disruption to the international cricket calendar.
Justin Langer’s side had been preparing for a three-match Test series, with Cricket Australia naming the touring squad only last week.
The fixtures were expected to take place in February and March, but worsening conditions in South Africa have made the trip untenable.
The COVID-19 outbreak in South Africa has been fueled by the emergence of a more contagious variant of the virus, raising serious safety concerns.
With close to 1.5 million confirmed infections and more than 44,000 recorded deaths, the nation remains the hardest hit on the African continent in both case numbers and fatalities.
Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia’s interim chief executive, explained that the decision followed detailed medical consultations. “It has become clear that travelling from Australia to South Africa at this current time poses an unacceptable level of health and safety risk to our players, support staff and the community,” Hockley stated.
He emphasized that the choice was not made lightly, especially given the value of sustaining international cricket during the pandemic.
“However, we have been consistent since the start of the pandemic that the health and safety of our people is always our number one priority. Unfortunately, despite best efforts to agree on a biosecurity plan, the risks are simply too great at this time,” he added.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa announced earlier this week that the country had “passed the peak” of its second COVID-19 wave. Despite this, the virus continues to place severe strain on the healthcare system.
The government has unveiled plans to vaccinate at least 67 percent of the population by the end of the year in an effort to achieve herd immunity.
While the immediate series has been called off, Cricket Australia has left the door open for rescheduling.
Hockley confirmed that both boards remain committed to playing the matches at a future date, saying, “We look forward to playing the series against CSA at a date to be confirmed in due course.”
The cancellation is a disappointment for cricket fans on both sides. For Australia, the matches were an opportunity to solidify their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
For South Africa, hosting a major cricketing nation would have been a boost to the sport domestically, as well as to the local economy.
The scrapping of the tour also underscores the continuing challenges facing international sport amid the pandemic. Even with strict biosecurity measures, cross-border competitions remain vulnerable to sudden changes in public health conditions.
For now, players and fans alike must wait to see when the two cricketing nations can safely meet again on the field.
