Ghanaian dancehall sensation Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has publicly endorsed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s bid for a second term under the “4 More For Nana” campaign ahead of the December 2020 general elections.

Speaking on Joy FM on June 13, 2020, the controversial artist praised the president’s leadership, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, urging Ghanaians to retain Akufo-Addo for another four years. “Nana Addo has done a lot and needs to be commended. Ghanaians should open their eyes,” he stated.

Defying Political Ties

Shatta Wale’s endorsement is notable given his father’s affiliation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The artist’s support for Akufo-Addo, leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stirred reactions, especially after his former friend Pope Skinny accused him of aligning with the government despite NDC ties. The endorsement reportedly caused unease in the camp of NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, highlighting Shatta Wale’s influence in Ghana’s politically charged landscape.

Musical and Political Synergy

Earlier in 2020, Shatta Wale collaborated with Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, on the song Zion, which promotes tolerance and unity. In a tweet on February 27, 2020, Shatta Wale wrote, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” signaling his intent to use music as a platform for social and political messages. This aligns with his broader efforts to engage youth, as seen in his upcoming ride-hailing service, Shaxi, aimed at reducing unemployment.

Context of Endorsement

Shatta Wale is not the first entertainer to back Akufo-Addo, with musician Lucky Mensah releasing a single in October 2019 supporting the president’s re-election.

The “4 More For Nana” campaign has gained traction amid Ghana’s response to the Covid-19 crisis, with the government implementing measures like partial lockdowns and a GH¢600 million stimulus package for businesses.

Shatta Wale’s endorsement underscores Akufo-Addo’s handling of the pandemic, which saw Ghana report over 11,000 cases by June 2020, as a key factor in his support.

Public Reaction and Influence

The artist’s outspoken nature and massive following—over 2 million on Instagram in 2020—amplify his political stance.

Posts on X reflect mixed sentiments, with some fans praising his boldness while others question his motives, citing his history of controversies, such as a 2022 fine for publishing false news about a shooting.

Nonetheless, Shatta Wale’s call for voters to support Akufo-Addo resonates with his “Shatta Movement” fanbase, potentially swaying youth voters in a country where 60% of the population is under 30.

Looking Ahead

As Ghana approaches the December 2020 elections, Shatta Wale’s endorsement adds a cultural dimension to the political discourse. His influence, bolstered by hits like Ayoo and Mahama Paper, positions him as a key voice in mobilizing young Ghanaians. Whether his support will translate into votes for Akufo-Addo remains to be seen, but it underscores the growing intersection of entertainment and politics in Ghana’s vibrant democracy.
