Newcastle United is taking official action following a disturbing event in France. The club intends to file a formal complaint with UEFA regarding the treatment of Newcastle United fans. Officials allege that local authorities utilized excessive force after the recent Champions League match against Marseille.
The incident occurred at the Stade Vélodrome on Tuesday following a 2-1 defeat. The club asserts that police actions were both “unnecessary and disproportionate.”
Aggressive Tactics Against Newcastle United Fans
Trouble began after the final whistle during a mandatory hold-back period. This protocol required traveling supporters to remain inside the stadium for safety.
However, the situation quickly deteriorated. Witnesses claim police launched a crackdown once the first group of supporters departed.
The club stated that officers deployed riot shields, batons, and pepper spray. Consequently, this heavy-handed approach caused dangerous overcrowding in the upper concourse.
Officials were quick to respond. A club statement noted that many supporters were visibly distressed. Therefore, staff immediately raised concerns with the police, labeling the conduct “unacceptable.”
Witnesses Describe “Inhumane” Conditions
Supporters have shared harrowing accounts of the night. Many described being treated like criminals despite complying with instructions.
Liam Phillips, a season ticket holder, called the experience “inhumane.” He witnessed officers striking people indiscriminately.
“There was no aggro,” Phillips said. “It was all good-natured.”
Furthermore, sanitary conditions were reportedly appalling. Darren Curry, from the Newcastle Supporters Club, described a scene of panic. He noted that fans were “kettled” by security and forced to stand in urine after toilets overflowed.
Authorities Deny Misconduct
Conversely, local law enforcement has rejected claims of widespread violence. They admitted to using tear gas but described it as “very limited.”
Officials insisted this was a specific response to a crowd surge. Moreover, Marseille officials defended the operation, blaming the hygiene issues on “acts of vandalism.”
This controversy adds to growing concerns about safety in France. Critics point to a systemic issue with policing at major events, recalling the similar chaos of the 2022 Champions League final.
