Two promising Nigerian teenagers, Olaiya Timileyin and Daniel Udoh, will compete for their country at the 2025 Junior Open Water Championships in Conakry, Guinea.
The three-day event starts this Friday and runs until Sunday.
Intensive Preparation in Lagos
Both swimmers have trained full-time throughout November at a special camp in Lagos. Nigeria Aquatics Federation president Dukwu Chamberlain has personally overseen their preparation.
The pair leaves Nigeria on Thursday to join the continental competition.
Why This Tournament Matters
Chamberlain explained that the Conakry meet is a crucial warm-up before the Africa Youth Games in Angola (10–20 December 2025).
“Competing internationally right now is the perfect way to get them ready,” he said. “Open water is very different from swimming in a pool. Athletes must handle waves, currents, navigation, and keep strong mentally. This experience will help them perform better in Angola and future big events.”
Praise for the Athletes
Chamberlain commended the young swimmers for their hard work and attitude. “They have shown great discipline and professionalism. They will represent Nigeria with pride and fight for the best results,” he added.
The federation views this trip as an important step in developing the next generation of top open-water swimmers who can win medals at senior African and world championships.
