The House of Representatives has passed an emergency motion demanding the Federal Government act instantly to bring former President Goodluck Jonathan and all stranded Nigerians home from Guinea-Bissau after Wednesday’s military takeover.
Jonathan Trapped on AU/ECOWAS Mission
The ex-president is leading the joint African Union and ECOWAS election observer team that monitored Sunday’s presidential vote. When soldiers seized power, closed every border and placed the country on lockdown, Jonathan and his delegation became unable to leave.
“No Nigerian Left Behind”
During Thursday’s plenary, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu paused normal business to raise the alarm. House Leader Julius Ihonvbere stressed that the safety of a former Head of State is non-negotiable, while Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda insisted the rescue must cover every citizen.
The motion sailed through on voice vote, directing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to use all diplomatic tools to secure safe passage for Jonathan and every Nigerian nationals.
Bissau in Chaos
The junta has dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, detained President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and sealed land, sea and air exits. With the capital under heavy military presence and flights grounded, foreign observers remain stuck.
Nigeria’s lawmakers have made it clear: bring them home now.
