Uganda: Hundreds Arrested at Bobi Wine Rallies

Tension is soaring in Uganda just weeks before the January 2026 general election. The main opposition party, National Unity Platform (NUP), says security forces have rounded up hundreds of its members during rallies for presidential candidate Bobi Wine.

Where the Arrests Happened

Most detentions took place in:

  • Kampala (the capital)
  • Mukono district

Both areas are seen as NUP strongholds.

Two Different Stories

  • NUP leaders call it a deliberate crackdown to silence the opposition.
  • Police say Bobi Wine organised illegal street marches that broke public-order rules, forcing officers to step in and restore calm.

A Rematch with High Stakes

Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi), the former music star who came second in 2021, is once again challenging President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled since 1986.

Wine remains the biggest threat to the ruling party’s long grip on power.

January Vote Looms

In a few weeks, millions of Ugandans will vote for a new president and over 500 parliamentary seats. Observers warn the campaign could see more clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

With every rally now under heavy watch, Uganda’s 2026 election is already shaping up to be one of the most charged in years.
