SHETTIMA

The Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Angola, attending the 7th African Union–European Union Summit in the capital, Luanda.

Shettima touched down at the Protocol Hall around 2:00 p.m. on Monday. He arrived directly from Johannesburg, where he attended the G20 summit.

Representing the President

The Vice President is leading the Nigerian delegation. He is standing in for President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu canceled his trip to oversee urgent security concerns at home. Recently, kidnappers abducted more than 300 people, mostly schoolchildren. Consequently, the President stayed in Abuja to coordinate the rescue efforts.

Focus on Security and Trade

Shettima wore white traditional attire upon arrival. Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar accompanied him into the venue.

The Vice President has a clear agenda. He will emphasize cooperation between Africa and the EU. Specifically, he will focus on security and trade. These issues are critical due to rising instability in the region.

Shettima will participate in key discussions. He is expected to deliver Nigeria’s statement during a closed-door session on Peace, Security, and Governance.

A Historic Gathering

The summit marks a major milestone. It celebrates 25 years of formal cooperation between the AU and the EU.

The event’s theme is “Promoting Peace and Prosperity through Effective Multilateralism.” Two leaders are co-chairing the gathering:

  • João Lourenço: President of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union.
  • António Costa: President of the European Council.

High Economic Stakes

The economic stakes are very high. Trade between Africa and the EU remains strong. In 2024, the total trade volume reached nearly $410 billion.

The two-day event follows a strict schedule.

  • Monday: Leaders will discuss Peace, Security, and Multilateralism.
  • Tuesday: The focus shifts to Prosperity, Migration, and Mobility.

Finally, the summit will conclude with a joint press conference.
