Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of Nigeria’s legendary statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has passed away at the age of 62.
The Awolowo family announced his death on Thursday, calling him the “steady pillar” who held their home together with love and wisdom.
President Tinubu: “A True Son of the Awolowo Legacy”
President Bola Tinubu described the loss as a national tragedy. In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Segun’s dignity and lifelong commitment to service.
“He carried the Awolowo name with grace in everything he did – from the courtroom to the boardroom,” Tinubu said. He extended heartfelt condolences to Segun’s wife, children, and mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo.
Ogun Governor: “Gone Too Soon”
Governor Dapo Abiodun said he received the news with “total shock.” He remembered Segun as warm, brilliant, and deeply committed to Nigeria’s progress, adding that “his impact far outweighed the years he spent with us.”
From Tragedy to Triumph
Born two months after his father’s death, Segun Awolowo turned early loss into lifelong purpose. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989, he rose through top law firms before entering public service.
He served as Special Assistant under President Obasanjo, held key secretary roles in Lagos State (2007–2011), and made history as the longest-serving Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (2013–2021).
In 2021, ECOWAS countries unanimously elected him President of National Trade Promotion Organisations.
Nigeria has lost one of its quiet giants – a man who lived the Awolowo legacy every single day.
Rest in peace, Olusegun Awolowo (1963–2025).
