Turkey’s fiercest football rivals are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown this January. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe have officially escalated their pursuit of Nigerian international Ademola Lookman. The 28-year-old winger is now a top transfer target following a complete breakdown in relations with his current club, Atalanta.
Despite his pivotal role in Serie A last season, Lookman’s time in Bergamo has turned toxic. Consequently, the Turkish giants are ready to offer him an escape route.
Tensions Reach Breaking Point in Italy
The hostility dates back to the summer transfer window when Atalanta blocked a blockbuster move to Inter Milan. The Italian champions tabled a €45 million bid, but Atalanta held firm at €50 million. This rigid stance reportedly infuriated Lookman, leading to a brief training ground walkout.
However, the situation imploded on November 5. During a Champions League clash against Marseille, Lookman was seen in a heated touchline row with then-manager Ivan Juric. Although Juric has since been sacked, the damage appears irreversible. As a result, the winger is actively seeking a fresh start.
Turkish Giants Circle for Lookman
Both Istanbul powerhouses are eager to capitalize on the chaos.

Galatasaray’s Plan: The club sees Lookman as a “marquee signing.” Reports indicate they are preparing a massive contract offer worth €9 million per year. Their strategic goal is to reunite Lookman with his Super Eagles teammate, Victor Osimhen, creating a lethal Nigerian attacking partnership at Rams Park.
-
Fenerbahçe’s Persistence: The Yellow Canaries have monitored Lookman for months. They previously submitted a bid immediately after the summer window closed, which Atalanta swiftly rejected. They remain determined to hijack their rival’s plans.
Form Dip Complicates Negotiations
While interest remains high, the Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe transfer battle faces complications regarding the player’s current form. Last season, Lookman was a sensation, delivering 15 goals and five assists.
In stark contrast, he has struggled significantly during the 2025/26 campaign. He has managed only one goal in seven Serie A appearances, a sharp decline for a forward known for consistent double-figure returns.
What Lies Ahead?
Negotiations will be tricky. Lookman’s contract runs until June 2027, giving Atalanta leverage. Furthermore, his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations this December could delay a mid-season switch.
Atalanta’s hierarchy plans to evaluate his attitude under new head coach Raffaele Palladino. Meanwhile, European heavyweights like Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are watching from the sidelines. However, if a sale is sanctioned, the Turkish giants are currently in pole position to strike.
