Details of the Tembisa School Shooting
According to police reports, the incident took place shortly after 5:00 PM. At the time, staff members were inside the administration building. They were busy preparing for a scheduled meeting.
Suddenly, the atmosphere turned into a nightmare. Colleagues in an adjacent office heard a rapid volley of gunfire. Consequently, they immediately took cover to protect themselves from the assailants.
Once the shooting stopped, staff members cautiously exited their offices. Tragically, they discovered the 58-year-old principal and a 55-year-old administrative officer in the corridor. Both women had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Paramedics arrived at the scene rapidly. However, they could not save the victims. Both were declared dead on site due to the severity of their injuries.
Investigation and Government Response
Police have officially opened a murder docket. As of Wednesday, law enforcement has not yet made any arrests. Furthermore, the motive behind this targeted killing remains unknown.
Senior officials responded quickly to the tragedy. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school hours later. They met with the grieving families and shaken school officials to offer condolences.
Urgent Calls for Justice
MEC Chiloane condemned the killings in the strongest possible terms. He expressed deep outrage that such violence penetrated a place of learning.
“This is a space meant to be safe for children and educators,” Chiloane remarked. He further urged the police to act swiftly to apprehend the suspects.
In response, the department has deployed psychosocial support teams. Counselors are currently on-site to help teachers and learners process this traumatic event.
