French President Emmanuel Macron is returning to the continent this week. The primary goal of Macron’s African tour is to revitalize diplomatic connections. Furthermore, the Élysée Palace aims to spark fresh momentum in France’s relationship with the region.
Strengthening Ties in the Indian Ocean
The diplomatic mission begins on Thursday in Mauritius. During this visit, Macron intends to foster stronger regional partnerships. Specifically, he will focus on cooperation between Mauritius and neighboring French territories, such as Mayotte and Réunion.
G20 Summit and Complex Diplomacy
Following his time in the Indian Ocean, the President heads to South Africa. He is scheduled to attend the G20 summit over the weekend. Notably, the United States has opted to boycott this high-profile gathering.
However, Macron views this as a chance for critical dialogue. He plans to hold talks with his Algerian counterpart during the summit. Consequently, both leaders hope to de-escalate lingering tensions between their nations.
Engaging with Gabon’s New Authority
Macron’s African tour also includes a significant stop in Gabon. There, he will meet with President Brice Oligui Nguema. Nguema, an army general, secured the presidency in the April elections.
His victory marked the end of a two-year transition period. This transition followed the coup that ousted Ali Bongo, a longtime ally of France. The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron intends to signal official support for the newly established Gabonese authorities.
Final Stop: The EU-AU Summit
Finally, the diplomatic journey concludes in Angola. Macron will participate in the European Union – African Union summit. Leaders anticipate strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors. Key discussions will center on trade, peace, security, and green development initiatives.
