The United Nations has strongly condemned Monday’s pre-dawn raid on a girls’ boarding school in Maga, Kebbi State, where gunmen killed a staff member and abducted more than 20 students.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq called the attack “tragic” and urged authorities to secure the “swift and safe return” of every captive.
How the Attack Happened
Armed men scaled the school fence at Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School around 4 a.m. Shots were fired during a brief clash with police. One brave staff member lost his life trying to protect the students.
The attackers then forced the girls into the darkness.
Hope Amid the Horror
Security forces, soldiers, and local hunters are sweeping nearby forests in a massive search operation. In a small piece of good news, at least one student has already escaped and is now safe with authorities.
A Global Call for Justice
UNICEF joined the outcry, insisting the perpetrators must face justice under Nigerian and international law.
The agency warned that schools remain dangerously exposed: in 10 high-risk states, only 37 % have basic early-warning systems to detect incoming attacks.
Another school. Another morning stolen. The world is watching and demanding the girls come home now.
