President Bola Tinubu welcomed Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, to the State House in Abuja on Monday, November 17, 2025.
The high-profile meeting centered on Nigeria’s recent economic policy changes and the critical role the nation’s youth will play in its future development.
Economic Moves Likened to “Surgery”
President Tinubu explained to the Duke that decisions such as eliminating the fuel subsidy and unifying the country’s exchange rate were difficult but absolutely essential.
“These decisions were like surgery to fix deep problems—not just painkillers for short relief,” he explained, emphasizing the long-term strategic nature of the reforms.
Early positive signs from these actions are becoming visible:
- Foreign reserves have climbed above $40billion.
- Inflation is beginning to show initial signs of deceleration.
- New investments are flowing into key sectors, including technology and energy.
Youth as the Core Priority
The President affirmed that the motivation behind every reform is to generate opportunities for Nigeria’s younger population.
“Our young people will own and lead this new Nigeria,” Tinubu stated. He added, “We are giving them skills to compete anywhere in the world,” linking these efforts to Nigeria’s upcoming priorities at the G20 forum, which focus heavily on youth empowerment.
British Royal Praises Nigerian Talent
Prince Edward, who serves as the Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, commended Nigerian youth, calling them “the country’s greatest strength.”
He provided an update on the Award program, noting that it has impacted over 30,000 young Nigerians since its launch in 1986. The Duke confirmed that the program’s next international forum will be hosted in Lagos.
Deepening Partnership
Both leaders agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in several areas, including education, skills development, and collaborative efforts on climate action. Current trade between the United Kingdom and Nigeria already exceeds £7billion annually.
As the Duke continues his visit to Lagos and Enugu, President Tinubu reiterated his core message to the world: “Nigeria is open for business, and our youth are ready to lead.”
