In a dramatic playoff decider on Sunday night in Rabat, Morocco, Congo delivered one of the biggest upsets in African football history by eliminating Nigeria from the race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
How the Match Unfolded
Nigeria started fast. Midfielder Frank Onyeka fired the Super Eagles ahead in just the 3rd minute. Congo hit back in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia to make it 1-1.
The game stayed level through 90 minutes and extra time. A major surprise came at half-time when star striker Victor Osimhen, currently the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League, was substituted and did not return.
Penalty Heartbreak for Nigeria
With no further goals, the tie went to penalties.
Congo captain Chancel Mbemba, who had already scored the winner against Cameroon days earlier, kept his cool and slotted the decisive spot-kick. Congo won the shootout 4–3.
What Happens Next
Congo now advances to the six-team intercontinental playoff in March 2026, where two final spots for the World Cup (co-hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico) will be decided.
Nigeria, three-time African champions and regular World Cup participants, are officially out.
