The world of Japanese cinema and theatre mourns the passing of master actor Tatsuya Nakadai. The highly regarded performer, celebrated for his collaborations with the legendary Akira Kurosawa, passed away at the age of 92, his private acting school confirmed on Tuesday.

Rising to Global Acclaim

Nakadai initially achieved significant fame both in his home country and internationally. His breakthrough came under the direction of filmmaker Masaki Kobayashi.

Kobayashi chose him for the starring role in the monumental anti-war production, The Human Condition—an epic trilogy released during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The actor’s school, Mumeijuku, did not release information regarding the specific time or cause of Nakadai’s death.

The Kurosawa Era

Nakadai’s connection with famed director Akira Kurosawa evolved over decades. He began with a brief appearance in Kurosawa’s acclaimed 1954 film, Seven Samurai. Later, he became the director’s preferred leading man after actor Toshiro Mifune established an independent career path.

Nakadai took the lead role in Kurosawa’s 1980 epic, Kagemusha. This powerful film earned the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

He also delivered a commanding performance in Ran (1985). This work was Kurosawa’s cinematic interpretation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, where Nakadai played the role of the tragic warlord who divided his kingdom among his children.

Influence and Teaching

Nakadai’s work extended beyond his roles with Kurosawa. He appeared in other significant films, including Yojimbo (1961), alongside Mifune. He also worked with other major directors of the era, such as Kon Ichikawa and Hiroshi Teshigahara.

His passion for teaching was formalized in 1975 when he founded his private acting school and troupe, Mumeijuku. He created the institution with his late wife, actress Yasuko Miyazaki, specifically to train the next wave of performers.

His dedication to mentorship yielded remarkable results. For instance, former student Koji Yakusho won the Best Actor prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for his role in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days.

Nakadai remained active and committed to his craft until the end. He made a stage appearance earlier this year in the Noto region, a community still recovering from a devastating earthquake that had struck the previous New Year’s Day.
