PAPAL

A key personnel announcement was made by the Vatican on Monday concerning the Prefecture of the Papal Household. His Holiness Pope Leo XIV named Fr. Edward Daleng as the new Vice Regent of this essential central office.

This specific Vatican bureau carries significant administrative weight. It holds the responsibility of coordinating all papal audiences. It ensures that the Pope’s engagements are executed with precision and respect for established tradition.

The Dynamics of the New Position

As the newly appointed Vice Regent, Fr. Daleng will collaborate closely with Archbishop Leonardo Sapienza, the acting Regent. Their shared responsibilities include the detailed management of the Pope’s entire calendar.

This includes organizing both private meetings and public gatherings. It further covers sessions with heads of state, international diplomats, and senior church leaders.

Fr. Daleng is also assigned to help oversee papal ceremonies and official visits. Additionally, he will contribute to the management of the papal apartments and the complex logistical needs of Pope Leo’s daily schedule.

The Catholic Constitution, Praedicate Evangelium, mandates that the Prefecture comprise a Prefect and a Regent, along with assisting officials. The title of Vice Regent is not formally codified within the Constitution.

However, establishing this post is viewed as facilitating a smoother transition. It allows for a gradual orientation into the detailed operations of the Vatican household.

Profile of the New Official

Fr. Edward Daleng is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). Before this elevation, he served his order as its General Counsellor and Procurator General.

He was born on April 4, 1977, in Yitla’ar, a community within Nigeria’s Plateau State. Fr. Daleng possesses an impressive academic and clerical history.

His first vows in the Augustinian Order were taken on November 9, 2001. He solemnized those vows three years afterward. After his priestly ordination on September 10, 2005, he pursued advanced studies. In 2012, he obtained a Doctorate in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy.

The Pontiff’s Connection to Africa

Fr. Daleng provided illuminating comments about the Supreme Pontiff’s affinity for the African continent shortly after Pope Leo’s election. This occurred during an interview with Vatican media.

“He has Africa in his heart,” Fr. Daleng revealed. He noted that Pope Leo made multiple visits to the Order’s African missions during his tenure as an Augustinian leader. “He has come to my country, Nigeria, on at least ten occasions,” Daleng stated. He specifically cited a visit in 2016 for an important intermediate General Chapter ceremony.

Pope Leo had visited Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, while fulfilling his duties within the Augustinian Order. He interacted with both members of his order and the broader Catholic community there.

Despite these powerful connections, Pope Leo has not yet visited any African nation, including Nigeria, since his inauguration as Pope on May 18, 2025.
