The diplomatic situation intensified when President Trump, on Friday, labeled Nigeria a “country of particular concern.” He cited persistent violence against Christians and the government’s perceived failure to protect religious minorities as justification.
The Nigerian government, conversely, has consistently denied any state knowledge or practice of religious persecution against any group.
Trump Threatens Military Action
The political rhetoric sharply escalated on Saturday. President Trump publicly threatened Nigeria with potential military intervention. This severe warning was contingent upon Nigeria’s failure to act decisively to halt the alleged killings of Christians.
Responding to the rising external threat, Onanuga referenced key remarks from President Tinubu’s recent address to his newly appointed military leaders. He highlighted that Tinubu had already underscored the necessity for determined and proactive security actions nationwide.
President’s Directive to Security Chiefs
Onanuga wrote that President Tinubu was “well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America” during his meeting with the service chiefs. The President’s core message focused heavily on demanding results over offering excuses:
- Evolving Threats: Tinubu noted that “Security threats are constantly evolving, constantly mutating.”
- New Dangers: He specifically cited the “recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South.”
- Decisive Action: The President directed, “We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.”
- Expectation of Results: “Nigerians expect results, not excuses,” the President instructed, demanding patriotic zeal from the armed forces.
- Innovation: Tinubu further charged the security chiefs to embrace “innovation, pre-emption, and courage.” He emphasized deploying technology to maintain a strategic advantage over those who threaten peace.
