Nigeria’s leading goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, holds a strong belief in the national team’s ability to triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The shot-stopper fully recognizes the intense pressure from Nigerian supporters.

He noted that fans expect the team not merely to participate but to bring home the coveted trophy.

The 2025 AFCON championship is scheduled to be hosted in Morocco. It will run from December 21, 2025, through January 18, 2026.

Confidence Built from Past Defeat

Nwabali rose to prominence during the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast. His impressive saves quickly established him as one of Nigeria’s standout players.

He maintains the entire squad learned vital lessons from their experience reaching the final a year ago.

During a television interview, Nwabali observed, “AFCON is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, not just in Africa.”

“As a big nation, we are always expected to win, not just to participate.”

Nigeria lost the previous year’s final 2-1 against the host nation, Ivory Coast. The Chippa United keeper expressed certainty that this gained experience has hardened the players’ determination for the upcoming Morocco tournament. He added, “Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it.”

The last time Nigeria secured the AFCON trophy was in 2013, under the leadership of the late coach Stephen Keshi. The nation’s previous victories were recorded in 1980 and 1994.

Facing Competition and Public Criticism

Nwabali’s spectacular goalkeeping in Ivory Coast earned him widespread commendation. It firmly established him as the country’s first-choice keeper.

However, he has recently faced scrutiny from the public. Concerns have focused on apparent errors, time-wasting tactics, and unnecessary on-field antics during the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches. These actions resulted in avoidable bookings.

Before the AFCON begins, Nwabali and his teammates have an immediate focus: securing their World Cup spot. They are scheduled to participate in the African playoffs next week.

Coach Eric Chelle is expected to announce his roster for the playoffs and the later AFCON soon. Nwabali must prepare for strong competition for the starting keeper position, as Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is likely making a return to the national team setup.
