CHENEY

Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney has passed away at the age of 84. Cheney, who served during the Republican administration of President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, died on Monday night.

A statement released by his family confirmed the news. The family specified that his death resulted from complications related to pneumonia, alongside cardiac and vascular disease.

A Life of Public Service

The family’s statement provided details regarding his passing:

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old.”

The statement also confirmed that his family was with him during his final moments. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” the family said.

The family paid tribute to his character, describing him as “a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honour, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

Career and Political Influence

Born in 1941, Cheney’s lengthy career in public life spanned multiple decades and administrations:

  • White House Chief of Staff: He served in this role during the 1970s under President Gerald Ford.
  • House of Representatives: He spent ten years as a member of the House of Representatives.
  • Secretary of Defense: He held this position under President George H.W. Bush and oversaw the 1991 Gulf War.

As Vice President, Cheney was recognized as a key architect of the nation’s response to the September 11 attacks, commonly known as the “war on terror.” He was also one of the earliest and most influential advocates for the 2003 military intervention in Iraq.

The family expressed immense gratitude for his contributions: “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man,” they added.

In his later years, Cheney became one of the most prominent Republican critics of President Donald Trump. Notably, two months before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, he publicly endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
