The Federal Government of Nigeria is inviting applications from interested young citizens for the 2026 National Health Fellows Program. This initiative, designed to bolster the nation’s healthcare sector, offers a comprehensive year-long engagement for successful candidates.

The Federal Government National Health Fellows Program will run for a period of 12 months. During this time, participants will benefit from intensive training, practical fieldwork experience, and dedicated mentorship.

Furthermore, fellows will be provided with a stipend to cover living expenses and support their full-time participation throughout the program’s duration.

Program Overview and Core Mission

The National Health Fellows Program is a key initiative led through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative SWAp Coordination Office, operating under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The fellowship’s core objective is ambitious:

  • Upgrade: To comprehensively upgrade existing primary healthcare centers nationwide.
  • Expansion: To construct over 8,800 new primary healthcare centers across all local government areas.
  • Goal: To ensure accessible and high-quality healthcare delivery across the country.
  • Mechanism: To introduce new social accountability mechanisms within the health system.

 

Eligibility Requirements for 2026 Applicants

To be considered for the National Health Fellows Program, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Age: Candidates must be between 25 and 35 years old.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, IT, or social sciences is required.
  • Experience: Applicants must demonstrate interest or experience in public health, health-related NGO/partner organizations, or community leadership projects.
  • Availability: Candidates must be available to participate in the fellowship full-time.
  • Residency: Candidates must be an indigene of the state for which they are applying.
  • Technology: Possession of a smartphone with data capabilities (e.g., for Zoom, WhatsApp) is mandatory.
  • References: A strong recommendation is required from a respected organization, a University Dean, or the place of primary assignment for NYSC members, vouching for the candidate’s character and leadership potential.
  • Skills: Demonstrated analytical skills and entrepreneurial drive are essential.
