Profound sadness has fallen over the Nigerian music community. The passing of celebrated live-band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, has been confirmed.

He was universally known by his professional name, Akiin Shuga. The highly influential founder of the Shuga Band died in New Brunswick, Canada, on October 30, 2025. He was 50 years old.

A Legacy of Overcoming Adversity

The life story of Akiin Shuga is recalled as one marked by exceptional determination and strong purpose. He was born in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, on January 6, 1975. He was afflicted by polio at the age of five.

Nevertheless, he successfully overcame physical challenges to establish himself. He became one of Nigeria’s most respected music entrepreneurs and live performers.

His career trajectory is often cited as a prime example of the modern resurgence of live music in Nigerian culture.

The Shuga Band was established by him in 1998. The group began its career modestly, playing initially at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos. Over succeeding years, the ensemble was expanded into a robust 14-member collective.

The band gained renown for its high-energy, electrifying performances. These were frequently featured at prestigious corporate events, state functions, and weddings.

His enterprise, Shuga Entertainment, was widely held up as a standard for excellence. It modeled a combination of creative artistry with strict professional business practices in the live performance sector.

Furthermore, he served as the first president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria. In this role, dedicated efforts were made by him to enhance industry standards and advocate for fair treatment among musicians.
