The legendary Spanish coach Rafa Benítez is back in football. Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos FC appointed him as manager on October 24, 2025.

The 65-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in Athens. In fact, this marks his 17th managerial role.

Benítez has been out of work since leaving Celta Vigo in 2024. Furthermore, his new contract is reportedly one of the largest in Greek football history.

Rafa Benítez Faces Immediate Challenge

The Athens club, Panathinaikos, is currently seventh in the 14-team Super League Greece.

As of October 24, the team has just nine points after six matches. Currently, they trail the leaders, PAOK, by eight points but do have one game in hand.

Consequently, the club has tasked Benítez with a major turnaround. They trust his tactical genius to revive their season and mount a title chase.

A Legendary Career

Benítez brings a world-class resume to Greece. Most famously, he guided Liverpool to a stunning 2005 Champions League victory against AC Milan.

His decorated career also includes top jobs at Valencia, Real Madrid, Napoli, and Newcastle United.

“I’m here to win,” Benítez stated at his unveiling. Indeed, he has a reputation for successfully reviving teams.

“This club has passion and history,” he added. “I’m ready to build something special.”

High Stakes and Fan Excitement

The announcement immediately electrified the club’s fanbase. For example, social media buzzed with references to his 2005 Liverpool comeback.

Greek media have labeled him a “tactical maestro.” However, some analysts question if he can adapt quickly to the Super League’s intensity.

Therefore, the pressure is on for Benítez to deliver results fast.

His first major test will be the upcoming match against Aris. Ultimately, Panathinaikos supporters are hopeful he can restore the club to its former glory.
