On Monday, October 20, 2025, Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) vowed to deliver trustworthy, accessible data to fuel sustainable national growth.
At the World Statistics Day event in Abuja, Statistician-General Adeyemi Adeniran stressed that data is key to tackling challenges like economic shifts, digital advancements, and climate change.
“Accurate, timely data in clear formats helps make smart decisions across all sectors,” he said. The event, themed “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone,” showcased NBS’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s data systems for better policymaking.
Key Achievements
Adeniran highlighted two major updates: the rebasing of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI).
In July 2025, the GDP base year shifted from 2010 to 2019, capturing new sectors like digital services, creative industries, food markets, pensions, and informal trade. This reflects Nigeria’s current economy more accurately.
“The GDP update gives us a sharper view of economic trends, aiding planning and investment,” Adeniran said. The CPI, rebased from 2009 to 2024, now tracks over 930 consumer items, up from 740, improving inflation measurements and supporting policies for vulnerable households.
Modernizing Operations
The NBS is leveraging technology to enhance data processes. A new platform, the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics, streamlines data collection and sharing across government agencies using existing records. This fosters collaboration with ministries, creating a stronger data network.
“Our motto, ‘Data for Everyone,’ pushes us to make data open and useful for all,” Adeniran said. The system simplifies access, ensuring statistics guide decisions in education, business, and policy effectively.
Overcoming Challenges
Adeniran noted obstacles like limited funds, skill gaps, and retaining skilled statisticians. “Data isn’t just numbers—it’s about people, like farmers needing loans or students learning,” he said. Solving these issues is crucial to meet rising demands for reliable statistics.
The World Bank’s Dr. Victoria Okafor praised NBS’s innovation and promised continued support. UNICEF’s Mrs. Bai Ajoku called for more funding to strengthen data systems, emphasizing their role in inclusive development.
Building a Better Future
The NBS’s work aligns with global trends, where data shapes effective policies. Updated GDP and CPI data empower leaders to address poverty, boost industries, and plan strategically. By including new sectors and refining inflation tracking, NBS ensures statistics match Nigeria’s needs.
The World Statistics Day event highlighted data’s power to transform lives. As Nigeria faces rapid change, NBS’s focus on quality and innovation makes it a vital player in national progress.
Adeniran urged stakeholders to embrace data-driven decisions to build a stronger, fairer future for all Nigerians.
