The United Nations has expressed deep concern over escalating El Fasher violence in North Darfur, Sudan, warning that the situation is rapidly spiraling into a humanitarian catastrophe.
Clashes between Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have intensified, leaving civilians trapped without access to basic needs or safe shelter.
Mounting Civilian Deaths and Suffering
According to local reports cited by the UN, more than 50 civilians have been killed in October alone.
Entire neighborhoods remain isolated, with thousands unable to access food, water, or medical assistance. The surge in El Fasher violence has paralyzed aid delivery, worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis.
RSF Accused of Atrocities
UN officials have accused the RSF of committing grave human rights violations.
Reports include murders, sexual assaults, and deliberate attacks on hospitals, schools, and other civilian facilities.
These acts, according to UN monitors, may constitute war crimes under international law.
Hospital and Mosque Attacks Shock the City
A humanitarian organization confirmed that RSF shelling struck a hospital in El Fasher, killing 12 civilians, including women and children.
The assault destroyed the hospital’s maternity ward, leaving expectant mothers without care.
In another attack, artillery fire hit a mosque sheltering displaced families, killing more than a dozen people.
Residents say the El Fasher violence has left no safe spaces in the city.
Aid Access Severely Restricted
The UN has warned that humanitarian access to El Fasher remains almost impossible.
Aid convoys face constant threats, while communication lines and supply routes have been cut off.
As a result, thousands are stranded in desperate need of food, medicine, and protection.
UN Condemns Escalation and Calls for Immediate Action
“We deplore this surge in violence,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, calling for urgent steps to safeguard civilians and restore humanitarian access.
The El Fasher violence, he added, highlights the pressing need for both warring parties to halt hostilities and comply with international humanitarian law.
A Plea for Protection and Peace
The United Nations has once again urged all armed factions to cease attacks on civilians and allow the free movement of aid workers.
Until then, the El Fasher violence continues to devastate families, leaving North Darfur’s capital on the brink of collapse.
