Romania Braces for Heavy Rain, Closes Schools

Share:

RAIN

Romanian authorities declared on October 7, 2025, that schools across southern regions, including Bucharest, will close on Wednesday.

The move follows severe weather warnings predicting heavy rainfall in the capital and five southeastern counties.

Intense Rainfall Forecast

The environment ministry projects 80-100 liters per square meter of rain, with isolated areas expecting up to 140 liters. Officials advised against travel to reduce risks during the anticipated storm.

Flood Defense Measures

To counter potential flooding, sandbags are being deployed in vulnerable low-lying zones. Bucharest’s interim mayor, Stelian Bujduveanu, assured citizens, “We’re prioritizing safety and city operations.” He urged calm, particularly for school-related travel.

Regional Preparations

Beyond Bucharest, five counties are closing schools and bolstering flood defenses. These steps aim to shield communities from the storm’s peak impact, expected overnight.

Recent Regional Floods

This summer, Romania suffered floods that killed three in the northeast. Last week, Bulgaria reported four deaths from coastal storms, underscoring escalating weather threats in the region.

Push for Climate Resilience

President Nicusor Dan has called for robust flood prevention investments. Labeling recent floods a “critical alert,” he emphasized building stronger defenses to protect lives and infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

Romania’s proactive measures reflect growing concerns over extreme weather. Authorities aim to ensure safety as the nation prepares for the impending deluge.
