Nigeria’s U20 football team, the Flying Eagles, reached Talca, Chile, on September 25, 2025, to compete in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Greeted warmly by FIFA officials, the Local Organizing Committee, and hotel staff, the team settled at Hotel Diego de Almagro and held their first training session that evening.
Group F Challenge
Drawn in Group F, Nigeria will face Norway, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia, with all matches set for Talca’s Estadio Fiscal.
Their campaign kicks off against Norway on September 29, followed by games against Saudi Arabia and Colombia.
Coach’s Confidence
Head Coach Ali Zubair expressed optimism, stating the team has fixed errors from the Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
“We’re stronger now and ready for Chile,” he said. A 12-day training camp in Santiago included friendlies: a 1-1 draw with Chile and a 3-1 win over Australia.
Nigeria’s Legacy
The Flying Eagles are a powerhouse in African youth football, with a storied history in the U20 World Cup since 1983.
They reached the finals in 1989 (losing to Portugal) and 2005 (losing to Argentina). Known for producing stars like Mikel Obi and Victor Osimhen, they’ve hit the semifinals multiple times.
Why It Matters
As two-time finalists, the Flying Eagles aim to shine in 2025, building on their recent form. Their performance could unearth new talents for Nigeria’s senior team, the Super Eagles.
Looking Ahead
With preparations complete, Nigeria’s focus is on a strong start against Norway. A deep tournament run could cement their legacy in youth football.
