Free Technical Education Nigeria: Government Enforces No Fees

Tunji-Alausa

Nigeria’s federal government has renewed its pledge to keep Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) tuition-free.

It also warned principals not to impose hidden charges. The policy ensures every child can access quality technical education without financial obstacles.

Minister Issues Clear Order

Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa shared the directive on the ministry’s X account.

He stated that the government funds all essentials, including boarding, uniforms, books, healthcare, and training.

“No principal has the right to demand extra fees,” Alausa declared. He confirmed that schools have received official notices to comply.

Parents Urged to Report Wrong Charges

To protect families, the ministry released hotlines—0803 657 6733 and 0803 637 3796—and an email (tse@education.gov.ng). Parents can use these to report illegal demands.

Furthermore, Alausa encouraged immediate reporting of violations.

Quick feedback, he stressed, will keep education free for every child.

Items Students Must Provide

Although the government covers almost everything, boarding students must bring personal supplies.

These include soap, bed sheets, rain boots, buckets, hoes, cutlasses, and one ream of A4 paper at registration.

Aligned With Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

According to Alausa, the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This plan prioritizes technical and vocational training as a foundation for national progress.

“No child should lose access because of fake charges,” the minister emphasized.

Stronger Monitoring Systems

The government has introduced monitoring tools to track compliance. It will also sanction schools that disobey the directive.

In addition, Alausa asked parents, students, and communities to stay alert. He said collective action will help FTCs produce skilled graduates for Nigeria’s future.

Why It Matters

Guaranteeing free technical education reduces financial stress on families. It also builds a skilled workforce, which strengthens Nigeria’s economy. Consequently, this policy lays the foundation for long-term national growth and youth empowerment.
