Congo Crisis Genocide: Tshisekedi Appeals to UN for Global Action

Congo crisis genocide

At the 2025 United Nations General Assembly, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) described the violence in eastern Congo as a “silent genocide.” He pressed world leaders to act immediately, warning that delay would deepen the humanitarian disaster.

Tshisekedi’s Demands for Peace

The Congolese leader outlined three urgent conditions for peace:

  • Rwanda must withdraw its forces.

  • Support for the M23 rebel movement must end.

  • Occupied territories must return to DRC control.

“These steps are non-negotiable if peace is to return,” Tshisekedi declared.

Conflict Rooted in Decades of Unrest

Eastern Congo, rich in minerals, has endured instability for more than three decades. The resurgence of M23 rebels in 2021—allegedly backed by Rwanda—has further fueled bloodshed. UN reports indicate that all armed groups may have committed war crimes.

Call for Justice and Recognition

Tshisekedi urged the international community to officially classify the crisis as genocide. He stressed that Congo’s plea was not for sympathy but for action.

“Peace in the heart of Africa cannot wait,” he said.

Targeting the Illegal Mineral Trade

The president also demanded sanctions against individuals and groups profiting from Congo’s mineral wealth, which he argued has long fueled violence and exploitation.

“These resources should no longer be instruments of destruction,” Tshisekedi emphasized.

Appeal for Global Solidarity

In closing, Tshisekedi urged nations to join forces in ending violence, halting illegal trade, and restoring stability. His speech positioned the Congo crisis as not only a regional tragedy but a global responsibility.
