President Duma Gideon Boko has declared September 29, 2025, a public holiday to honor Botswana’s first gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.

The celebration comes just one day before Independence Day on September 30. Officials say the holiday will unite the country in pride.

President Praises Athletes at UN Assembly

At the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Boko praised the athletes for their discipline and hard work.

He said their success proves that dedication can lead to global recognition and inspire young people across Botswana.

Relay Team Triumphs in Tokyo

Botswana’s 4x400m relay team—Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Busang Collen Kebinatshipi—won gold in a rain-soaked race in Tokyo.

They outran the United States, which took silver, and South Africa, which finished with bronze. This is the first time Botswana has reached the top of the podium at the World Athletics Championships.

National Pride and Global Recognition

The victory has sparked excitement across the country. Fans, sports groups, and leaders have praised the achievement.

By creating a public holiday, President Boko hopes to encourage celebrations in schools and communities.

Analysts say the win puts Botswana on the global sports map and lifts the nation’s spirit.
