Trump and Xi Advance TikTok Deal, Trade and Ukraine Talks

XI and Trump

U.S.–China relations took a positive turn on September 19, 2025, as President Donald Trump reported a constructive phone discussion with President Xi Jinping covering a possible TikTok agreement, trade talks, fentanyl control and the Ukraine conflict.

TikTok Agreement Gains Traction

Trump thanked Xi for movement on TikTok’s U.S. approval — a longstanding flashpoint in tech relations between the two countries.

While specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, the White House has yet to issue a formal statement.

Any breakthrough could ease tensions over data security and foreign app ownership, allowing the platform to operate more smoothly in the U.S. market.

Plans to Meet at APEC Summit

Both leaders agreed to meet in person as early as next month during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

Trump also said he intends to visit China in early 2026, with Xi scheduled to travel to the U.S. later in the year — signs of a sustained diplomatic push.

Broader Agenda Beyond TikTok

In addition to tech and trade, the call touched on addressing trade imbalances and the urgent need to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump described the exchange as constructive and confirmed that another phone conversation is planned soon.
“It was a very good discussion, and we’re both eager for the APEC meeting,” he wrote on social media.

Implications for Global Relations

Progress on TikTok and fentanyl cooperation reflects renewed efforts to stabilize U.S.–China ties.

Joint pushes for peace in Ukraine underscore shared interests in global security and economic stability.

With the APEC summit approaching, world leaders will watch closely to see whether these talks turn into tangible policy changes.
