The National Sports Commission (NSC) has paid all allowances and bonuses for Team Nigeria athletes at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
NSC Director of Press, Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, announced this on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
Commitment to Athlete Welfare
In Tokyo, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade met with athletes and Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) officials.
He emphasized the government’s focus on athlete welfare. “President Tinubu created the NSC to improve sports administration. Chairman Shehu Dikko ensures our athletes are well cared for,” Olopade said.
Call for Patriotism
Olopade urged athletes to stay patriotic.
“You represent Nigeria’s image globally. Your actions should reflect pride in our nation,” he said. He encouraged them to remain ambassadors of Nigeria despite challenges.
Resolving AFN Tensions
Olopade addressed past issues between athletes and the AFN. He expressed hope that open talks would build a stronger bond moving forward.
“President Tinubu’s mandate prioritizes your welfare,” he added.
Nigeria’s Success in Tokyo
The championships, running from September 13 to 21 at Japan’s National Stadium, have seen Nigerian highlights.
Kayinsola Ajayi reached the men’s 100m final, a first for Nigeria in 18 years. Tobi Amusan won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.24 seconds.
About the Championships
The World Athletics Championships, held every two years since 1991, is a top global event for track, field, marathon, and race walking.
Tokyo, selected in 2022 over Nairobi, Singapore, and Chorzów, hosts the 2025 edition. The city previously held the event in 1991, when Mike Powell set the long jump world record.
