Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has spoken out about the widely used title “Queen of Afrobeats” often linked to her name.
The award-winning singer made it clear that she does not embrace the label.
While the title sounds flattering, she explained that it puts unnecessary pressure on her and takes attention away from other female artists in Afrobeats.
Why Tiwa Savage Rejects the Title
In an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa shared that being called the “Queen of Afrobeats” makes her uneasy.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.
She further explained that the label creates expectations that do not align with her personality.
“Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable because if I start accepting it, I need to be humble. Secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t accept it. But I appreciate it,” Tiwa added.
Recognition Beyond Titles
Tiwa Savage suggested the title may have stuck because she was among the first Nigerian female artists to achieve international fame.
“I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artistes in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted,” she explained.
Celebrating Women in Afrobeats
Instead of focusing on one person, Tiwa stressed that Afrobeats is a movement built by many talented women.
She encouraged fans and the industry to celebrate all female artists who continue to contribute to the global growth of the genre.
By rejecting the “Queen of Afrobeats” title, Tiwa Savage is sending a powerful message: the success of Afrobeats belongs to every woman who plays a role in shaping its sound and influence worldwide.
