Conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The shooting happened only minutes into his “American Comeback” college tour, which was scheduled to visit 15 campuses nationwide.
Witnesses reported that Kirk had just started speaking when a gunman fired from nearly 200 yards away. The bullet struck him on stage. Despite the presence of police and Kirk’s security detail, the shooter managed to escape.
FBI Leads the Investigation
Federal authorities quickly stepped in. The FBI and the Utah Department of Public Safety are now leading the manhunt.
Investigators are reviewing several possible crime scenes, including the university and nearby areas where the suspect may have fled.
Two individuals were detained in the early hours of the investigation. However, they were later released after police confirmed they had no connection to the attack. As of now, officials have not named a suspect or confirmed a motive.
The FBI has opened a digital tip line and is urging the public to share any information that could help identify the shooter.
Chaos on Campus
The shooting caused panic on campus. Students were evacuated as emergency responders tried to save Kirk’s life. Conflicting reports spread online throughout the afternoon, with some suggesting he was in critical condition.
Later in the day, former President Donald Trump, one of Kirk’s closest allies, confirmed his death on Truth Social.
He also ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide. FBI Director Kash Patel later described the attack as a “calculated act of political violence” and vowed a full investigation.
Leaders React
The killing sparked outrage from leaders across the political spectrum. Trump released a video promising to fight political extremism. Other politicians called for calm and unity, warning that the tragedy could worsen existing political tensions.
Observers note that the shooting comes amid a rise in heated rhetoric, raising fresh concerns about the safety of public figures and the state of political discourse in the United States.
A Controversial but Influential Voice
Charlie Kirk was only 31 years old but had already become one of the most recognizable figures in conservative activism.
Through Turning Point USA, he built a national platform that energized thousands of young conservatives and influenced debates on college campuses.
His death leaves a significant gap in the movement. Supporters remember him as passionate and fearless, while critics often challenged his ideas.
For many, however, his legacy will be tied to his role in shaping the next generation of conservative leaders.
