Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen has been sidelined after picking up an ankle sprain in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Rwanda during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Uyo on Saturday.

The 25-year-old forward went down midway through the first half after a challenge from Rwanda’s Claude Niyomugabo. He was substituted early, raising concerns for both Nigeria and his club side, Galatasaray.

Initial Checks in Nigeria

After the match, Nigeria’s medical staff first believed the problem was minor. Media officer Promise Efoghe said Osimhen had only suffered a shin bruise.

“The team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin. He woke up this morning with discomfort and will not be travelling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game,” Efoghe explained.

However, further scans were scheduled once Osimhen returned to Turkey.

Galatasaray Confirms Sprain

When the striker arrived in Istanbul, Galatasaray doctors carried out a detailed examination. On Tuesday, team doctor Dr. Yener Slim confirmed Osimhen had sustained a moderate ankle sprain with ligament tension and bleeding.

“The necessary treatment has been started to ensure he returns to the field as soon as possible,” Slim said. No exact recovery timeline was given.

This diagnosis rules Osimhen out of Nigeria’s next qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein, a crucial game for their World Cup hopes.

Super Eagles Without Their Star

In Osimhen’s absence, Cyriel Dessers started against Rwanda but struggled to create chances. Substitute Tolu Arokodare stepped up in the second half, scoring in the 51st minute to seal the victory.

Despite the win, losing Osimhen for the South Africa clash is a major setback. His speed and finishing ability have been vital for the Super Eagles.

Club Concerns for Galatasaray

Osimhen has made a strong start to life in Turkey. After joining Galatasaray permanently from Napoli in a €75 million deal, he scored two goals in three league matches. His contributions have helped Galatasaray maintain a perfect start with 12 points from four games.

His availability for the upcoming league fixture against Eyüpspor remains uncertain, with the club prioritizing a safe recovery.

Wider Impact

The timing of the injury is worrying for both Nigeria and Galatasaray. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently defended its players against criticism, and losing Osimhen now adds pressure to the national team.

For his club, his absence could disrupt their momentum in the league. Both sides will closely monitor his recovery, knowing Osimhen’s return is critical to their success this season.
