Burundi

On September 7, 2025, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) picked Ézéchiel Nibigira, Burundi’s former Foreign Minister, as its new president during a summit in Equatorial Guinea.

He replaces Angola’s Gilberto Verissimo for a five-year term.

Who Is Nibigira?

Nibigira is a prominent member of Burundi’s ruling CNDD-FDD party and a parliament member. With a doctorate in business administration and finance, he has served as Burundi’s ambassador to Kenya and as Minister for the East African Community. His background prepares him for leadership, but big challenges await.

Tackling Regional Conflict

A major focus for Nibigira is the fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Burundi, a DRC ally, has tense ties with Rwanda, which backs the M23 rebels clashing with DRC forces.

Rwanda left ECCAS, claiming it sides with the DRC. Nibigira must work to ease these tensions and bring peace.

Fixing ECCAS

Nibigira also needs to improve ECCAS, which started in 1983 to promote peace and economic growth in Central Africa.

The 10-member group has faced criticism for weak management. Strengthening its reputation is a key goal for his presidency.

Looking Ahead

Nibigira steps into a tough role at a critical time. By addressing the DRC crisis and pushing for better management, he could help ECCAS bring stability and progress to Central Africa.
