Escaped Tiger Euthanised in South Africa After Attacks

An eight-year-old female Bengal tiger, Sheba, was euthanised after a four-day rampage in the countryside south of Johannesburg, where she attacked a man and killed several animals. The decision to put her down came after she posed an increasing threat to a residential community, highlighting the risks of keeping exotic animals in a country where tiger breeding has become surprisingly common.

A Dangerous Escape

Sheba escaped from a private farm in Walkerville, 30 kilometers south of Johannesburg, on a Saturday, sparking a frantic search effort. The tiger, not native to South Africa, roamed freely for four days, leaving a trail of chaos. According to Gresham Mandy, a member of a local safety volunteer group, Sheba attacked a 39-year-old man, who survived but required hospitalization for leg injuries. Her spree also claimed the lives of a dog and a deer, while another dog was so severely mauled that it had to be euthanised.

The escape underscored the growing presence of tigers in South Africa, a country where they are not indigenous. In recent years, tiger breeding has surged, driven by private ownership and commercial trade, raising concerns about the safety and ethics of keeping such wild animals in close proximity to human populations.

A Risky Pursuit

Tracking Sheba proved challenging for the dozens of volunteers, animal experts, and community members involved in the search. Using drones and helicopters, the team scoured the dense terrain around Walkerville, where tall grass and thick vegetation provided ideal cover for the elusive predator. Despite their efforts, the tiger evaded capture until her final act of aggression forced a difficult decision.

On Wednesday, just before dawn, Sheba killed a dog on a private farm housing six families. “It was becoming too much of a risk,” Mandy explained, emphasizing the immediate danger to residents. With no viable option to safely contain her, the decision was made to euthanise the tiger. “In that moment, there was no other option but to put her down,” he added, reflecting the urgency of prioritizing community safety.

The Broader Issue of Tiger Breeding

The incident has reignited debates about South Africa’s burgeoning tiger breeding industry. While tigers are not native to the region, their rearing has become a notable trend, often for commercial purposes or as exotic pets. A report by the global animal rights organization Four Paws revealed that 359 tigers—nearly a tenth of the global population—were exported from South Africa between 2011 and 2020, primarily to zoos. This trade highlights the scale of the industry and its implications for both animal welfare and public safety.

Sheba’s escape and subsequent attacks expose the challenges of regulating exotic animal ownership in South Africa. The presence of such predators in private enclosures near populated areas raises questions about the adequacy of oversight and the potential dangers to communities unprepared for encounters with wild animals.

A Tragic Outcome

The euthanisation of Sheba marks a somber end to a tense ordeal, but it also serves as a wake-up call for addressing the broader issues surrounding exotic animal breeding. The incident underscores the need for stricter regulations to ensure that such animals are kept in secure environments, far from human settlements. As South Africa grapples with the consequences of its growing tiger population, the tragic fate of Sheba highlights the delicate balance between human safety and the welfare of captive wildlife.
