The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has assured the public that former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, is safe in custody and not under any threat.
The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr. Francis Enobore, stated this in Abuja on Thursday, dismissing reports by an online media outlet that Kyari had been attacked by fellow inmates.
Fake News Allegations
Enobore described the report as false, reckless, and mischievous, adding that it was the handiwork of “jobless, cheap recognition-seeking charlatans masquerading as newsmen.”
He stressed that the publication also wrongly claimed the Service was considering transferring Kyari to the Department of State Services (DSS), which he said was entirely untrue.
Kyari Not in Danger
“For the record, Abba Kyari is one of the over 800 inmates in the location where he is being kept,” Enobore explained. “Notable individuals including ex-governors, ministers, senators, and other high-profile persons have passed through the same facility without any threat to their lives.”
He added that Kyari goes about his daily routine unharmed and has not faced any threats within the facility.
No Plans for Transfer
The NCoS spokesperson clarified that the Service had never requested, and had no reason to request, the transfer of Kyari or any inmate to another detention centre outside its jurisdiction.
Warning Against Misinformation
Enobore warned those spreading false information to desist from such unpatriotic acts or risk facing legal action.
He also noted that the Controller-General of the NCoS, Haliru Nababa, remained committed to upscaling inmates’ welfare and ensuring safe, humane custody, despite distractions from false media reports.
