Operatives of the Enugu Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested an outdoor advertisement contractor over political billboards in Enugu that falsely bore the name and logo of the Commission.
The two billboards, located at Otigba and Zik Avenue Junctions, carried offensive campaign messages that threatened the aspirations of certain politicians in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.
One of the inscriptions read:
“2023: Enugu PDP Learn From 2007 Election… EFCC IS COMING WITH KOBOKO ON CORRUPT CANDIDATES.”
Suspect Identified as Designer and Printer
Acting on credible intelligence, EFCC operatives on Saturday arrested one Baron Nnamdi, alleged to be the designer, printer, and owner of the billboards.
Nnamdi reportedly confessed in his statement that he was contracted by a media aide to a former deputy governor with governorship ambition. He further disclosed that he was paid ₦160,000 for the one-week campaign and supplied with the EFCC logo, operatives’ images, and the political messages used.
EFCC Pulls Down Fake Advertisements
Following his arrest, EFCC operatives visited the two billboard sites and dismantled the offensive advertisements.
In a statement issued on Sunday, EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest and reiterated that the Commission has no role in the political process beyond issues of economic and financial crimes.
Warning to Politicians
The EFCC cautioned politicians to desist from dragging the agency into partisan politics, warning that the full weight of the law would be brought against those impersonating the Commission or misusing its name and image.
