France’s Six Nations campaign has been dealt a blow after Damian Penaud and Romain Taofifenua tested positive for COVID-19. Both players will miss the crucial trip to Cardiff to face Wales at the Principality Stadium.

Winger Gabin Villière and forward Matthis Lebel have been drafted in as replacements. Head coach Fabien Galthié admitted the news was difficult for the squad, saying:

“Psychologically, it’s brutal. But we’ve got to keep going and the guys coming in are ready.”

Further Tests Could Affect More Players

The French camp remains on high alert, with further testing scheduled that could rule out more players ahead of Friday’s fixture. Galthié acknowledged the disruption, adding:

“We’d largely been spared problems with the coronavirus until now. But that’s the way it is. We have the resources to front up against Wales.”

Dupont Set to Lead Despite Injury Scare

Captain Antoine Dupont is expected to start despite leaving training early on Tuesday with a left arm issue. Galthié confirmed the scrum-half is fit to lead the team.

Dupont will line up alongside fellow Toulouse teammate Romain Ntamack, with Villière, Gaël Fickou, Jonathan Danty, and Yoram Moefana also starting in the backline. Melvyn Jaminet will feature at full-back.

All the forwards who impressed in the 36–17 victory over Scotland retain their starting roles.

Wales Make Four Changes

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac has announced four changes to his side. Seb Davies, Josh Navidi, and Gareth Thomas are included among the forwards, while veteran Jonathan Davies replaces the injured Nick Tompkins in defence.

Wales have struggled for consistency in this year’s championship and currently sit fifth in the standings with just one win from three matches. They have not beaten France in the Six Nations since 2019.

France Chase First Grand Slam Since 2010

France enter the clash in strong form, with three wins from three as they pursue a first Grand Slam title since 2010. Despite the COVID setbacks, the squad remains confident of extending their unbeaten run.
