Charles Taylor Warns Hudson-Odoi Against Switching Allegiance to Ghana

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has once again been linked with a potential nationality switch to Ghana, but not everyone is convinced it would be in his best interest.

The 20-year-old, born in England to Ghanaian parents, spent part of the summer vacationing in Ghana, where he met with President Nana Akufo-Addo. The president reportedly urged Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif and GFA President Kurt Okraku to do everything possible to secure Hudson-Odoi’s commitment to the Black Stars.

Charles Taylor Issues Career Warning

Former Ghana international Charles Taylor has strongly advised the Chelsea star to reject Ghana’s advances and continue pursuing his career with England.

“If Odoi is listening to me, I will advise him not to think of playing for the Black Stars,” Taylor told Angel TV. “He should continue playing for England even if it is under-100. It is better than playing for Ghana. Ghana is ending career.”

FIFA Eligibility Rules in Play

Hudson-Odoi has already made three senior appearances for England. However, under FIFA’s updated eligibility rules, he could still make a switch to Ghana in November next year—provided he does not add to his England caps.

FIFA regulations require players capped at senior level to wait three years from their last international appearance before switching allegiance.

Hudson-Odoi on His Future

Speaking earlier this month, Hudson-Odoi admitted he remains open-minded about his international future, though he stressed his commitment to England.

“I always had it in my mind to play for England,” he said. “But Ghana is my home as well… we’ll see, you’ll never know.”

Ghana’s Wider Recruitment Drive

Hudson-Odoi is not the only England-born player Ghana is targeting. The Black Stars are also eyeing potential switches from:

  • Tariq Lamptey (Brighton & Hove Albion)
  • Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)
  • Kwadwo Baah (Watford)

The Ghana Football Association hopes to strengthen the squad with players eligible through their Ghanaian heritage ahead of future international competitions.
