On December 25, 2020, National Security Operatives reportedly arrested Adbul-Latif Seidu Harrison, an NDC activist in Kintampo, Bono East Region, for allegedly threatening the families of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa on social media.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has since raised alarm over his unknown whereabouts, demanding transparency from authorities.

Details of the Incident

According to Bono East Regional NDC Secretary Mohammed Shamsudeen Ali, operatives took Harrison to Tamale, but subsequent inquiries revealed he was transferred to Accra. The NDC condemned the arrest as an attempt to “gag and oppress” critics of alleged police brutalities against NDC supporters post the 2020 elections, per a January 2, 2021, press release.

Allegations of Selective Justice

The NDC highlighted perceived double standards, noting that prominent figures like NPP MP Kennedy Agyapong made inflammatory remarks without facing arrest. “Why target a young man from Gulumpe in Kintampo?” Ali questioned, suggesting the government aims to silence dissent following the contentious 2020 polls.

Political Context

The arrest follows heightened tensions after the December 7, 2020, elections, with the NDC challenging results, particularly in Techiman South, as seen in their December 22 march to the Electoral Commission. Web sources, like Citi News, report ongoing NDC concerns about state-sponsored intimidation, including a similar case involving activist Seth Osei-Asiedu in 2022.

Call for Action

The NDC demands Harrison’s immediate release or disclosure of his location, echoing broader criticisms of National Security’s tactics, as seen in a 2025 case where an assemblyman alleged torture by operatives posing as security personnel. The party vows to pursue legal and public action to protect its members.
