On August 7, 2020, the basketball world mourned the sudden death of Nigerian-American player Michael Ojo, who passed away at just 27 years old in Belgrade, Serbia.

His former club, KK Crvena Zvezda, announced the heartbreaking news, stating that Ojo suffered a heart attack during an individual training session at Partizan Stadium.

A Towering Talent

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Ojo stood at an impressive 7 feet 1 inch (216 cm) and weighed 147 kg while playing for Crvena Zvezda.

Known for his powerful presence on the court, he quickly became a fan favorite in Serbia, wearing the iconic red-and-white number 50 jersey.

Ojo’s Time with Crvena Zvezda

Ojo joined KK Crvena Zvezda ahead of the 2018-2019 season, playing two seasons with the club. According to the club’s statement, “He won the hearts of players and fans alike with his dedication and spirit.”

During his tenure, he helped secure three titles: the ABA League, the Serbian Championship, and the ABA League Supercup.

His contract ended on June 30, 2020, but he parted ways with the club on friendly terms.

A Shocking Departure

Crvena Zvezda expressed deep sorrow, noting, “Michael’s sudden death has deeply shaken everyone—players, coaches, management, and fans—who welcomed him from day one.”

Reports indicate Ojo collapsed during a training session and could not be resuscitated despite being rushed to a hospital. The club said details of his funeral would be shared later.

Legacy and Tributes

Ojo’s journey began in Lagos before he moved to the U.S., where he played college basketball for Florida State University.

After going undrafted in the NBA, he built a successful career in Serbia, starting with KK FMP in 2017 before joining Crvena Zvezda.

His vibrant personality and skill earned him widespread admiration.

Tributes poured in from the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and fans, with moments of silence held across EuroLeague and ABA League games.

Questions Surrounding His Death

Ojo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2020 and lacked a training permit at the time of his death, prompting Crvena Zvezda to request an investigation.

While local media confirmed the heart attack as the cause, the circumstances raised concerns about his health and training conditions.

A Lasting Impact

Michael Ojo’s untimely passing left a void in the basketball community.

His achievements, warmth, and larger-than-life presence will be remembered by teammates, fans, and all who knew him in Nigeria, Serbia, and beyond.
